Day 49 on the Trail

The past few days out here have been phenomenal, yes it has been really hot but other than that the hiking has been wonderful. Today we were able to hike 24.1 miles from Cove Mountain Shelter to Marble Springs Campsite. Today was full of steep climbs, but I was ready for them and crushed them without much problem. I think I can easily say I have found my "Trail legs" as the call it.

Today Max and I hiked most of the day separately which is unusual for us but it worked. I felt like we both were able to talk to way more people today. I have found that we both have very different styles of hiking so it benefits us both if we just plan places to meet up and then go to them.

I still find it hard to minister out here. I really just try to talk to everyone and let them know that I care for them. Showing compassion is something I've found goes a long way out here. I also still offer food and stuff to hikers as well. Drink mixes usually produce the biggest smiles, after all it isn't to great drinking plain water day in and day out. Prayer has also been a huge focus lately.

Some cool things that happened today was that I saw a eastern box turtle this morning on the trail. I didn't get a good picture of it but it was still really cool. Also while I was hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway I ran across an older couple who gave me a water and a tangerine. It was really refreshing and I will encourage everyone to go out to the closest point the Appalachian Trail crosses and just do a little trail magic one day. You just don't realize how effective it is for hikers.

I'm headed home tomorrow for a few days but plan to be back on trail by Tuesday. I can't wait to get back out here and continue the ministry. Thanks for all the support and prayers!

Day 48 on the Trail

Another pretty solid day on the trail today. We covered 25 miles today from Dalevile to Cove Mountain shelter. It was not to difficult terrain wise other than the first climb this morning which was expected due to climbing back out of town.

The coolest part of the day is that the trail ran along the Blue Ridge Parkway for most of the day. This particular part of the parkway was called the skyline drive! The trail took us all across this beautiful route. Along the way I was fortunate enough to get a little trail magic! A car stopped and handed me a Gatorade, a Snickers, and an KitKat. It was really great and the drink helped me out because I'm horrible at conserving water.

It was a really warm day today and tomorrow supposed to be even warmer than today was. I will not complain though because it is way better than the other day when I was borderline hypothermic. Nature is coming to life before our eyes though, as each day passed the trees get more vibrant and flowers are blooming. This is making the hike so much more beautiful and breathtaking.

We caught back up with Jedi today and I tried hiking with him for a little while, I couldn't keep up with him though. He is extremely fast. Also, I found out that we had met someone else from the shelter before. Sweet Spot is a hiker that we met at the top of Georgia hostel. Jedi has been hiking with her for a few weeks now. Also I found out that he's probably going to get of the trail soon to go to school which I thought was odd but very smart. I feel like we have found a little bubble that we have been staying with, I'm kinda sad that after this weekend we are gonna be behind a bit. Don't get me wrong though I'm glad to be getting a few days off!

I hope everyone at home is having as great of a week as I have! Thanks for the support and prayers! It means a lot to me!

Day 47 on the Trail

Today was again a great day on the trail. We did some awesome sections of trail, crushed some miles, and made a friend along the way. Today we experienced slack-packing for the first time on the trail. It was an awesome experience, especially because the section of trail we covered today was 27 miles of not the easiest terrain.

We also decided to hike with a guy named booty today. It was actually really fun other than he was a little quicker than we were so most of the day was spent chasing him. It was just nice to hangout with someone new. Actually we ended up splitting a room with him because of how tired we were and also because we wanted to get some real food again tonight.

Some of the parts of trail we covered consisted of McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs. These are two iconic parts of the trail and we covered both of them in one day. I wish I could say that it was as cool as I thought it would be, but honestly I have seen way better views already along the trail. I did get to use those points as a rest stop for the day and also used the time to get to know Booty better.

After getting to the hotel we were able to get to our room and get a nice shower and freshen up. This is great because it's been a while since I have had a good clean shower.

Thanks for everyone's support and prayers!

Day 46 on the Trail

It was a great day for hiking today! Woke up this morning at around 7:30 and got moving! We had a pretty big goal of getting 25 miles to Four Pines Hostel over some pretty rugged terrain. Today we managed to reach our goal. Because it was a hostel we were staying at we were able to hike a little later because we didn't have to set up in the dark.

Before we get to the hostel part of the day let's dive into some of today's awesomeness. Throughout the whole day we did a lot of ridge running! This is one of my favorite parts of hiking the trail so far. Literally we hiked for a solid 10-15 miles today on top of the ridge of some mountain ranges. This was accompanied with some amazing views and tricky sections of rock walks. The rocks on top of the ridges we slippery due to the amount of rainfall and moisture it has been exposed to the past few days. I almost busted it a few times but managed to save myself.

We also came across a ton of animals today. We seen 2 snakes, many lizards, and a couple of frogs. The snakes we seen was a green snake and a timber rattler. The timber rattler was a pretty cool experience. After we found out what it was we decided to try to get a good picture of it. So I extended my trekking pole and max tried to pick it up with it. The snake was just a little to big and heavy to be picked up. I thought it was quite interesting that this snake didn't rattle or act aggressive at all during the whole ordeal.

We also had the chance to get some trail magic today. After a brutal climb around lunch we saw two guys standing by a bench at the top of a hill with a huge cooler. As we got closer they called us over and offered us ice cream, drinks, and fruit. This was so great, just having something cold to drink after the hard climb made the day way better. Plus it's hard to turn down chocolate milk. Ice cream is on a different level of greatness, at least for me. One of the guys actually is doing a thru hike this year as well and had just gotten of trail to see a buddy and get out of the rainy weather. While he was off trail he wanted to do a little trail magic. This is something I plan to do whenever I'm done. After we departed from the trail angels we made it to a memorial. The memorial was of Audie Murphy who was the most decorated WWII soldier. He passed away in a plan crash close to the trail so they made him this memorial.

The later part of the day consisted of some pretty cool sections of hiking. We went over a river where we swam for a few minutes. It was the first time swimming on the trail and it was great to cool off after hiking in the sun and mid 70's all day. The. We climbed to an iconic stone monolith called Dragons Tooth. It was a great view from the top although it was quite scary to climb on stone covered in sand with only about 2 feet of rock to stand on. It was the main highlight of the day. Coming down off of dragons tooth towards Four Pines Hostel was really rocky and steep, which would have been great and fun if I didn't have a heavy pack on and it was at the start of the day. But at the time we hiked it, we were worn out and it was scary trying not to fall and hurt ourselves with such a steep decent. I will definitely come back to it though and do the section fresh.

Once we arrived at the hostel we met some people and hung out with some we had already met. Jedi and Dad were two we had known from before. Also we got a shuttle into town this evening as well where we were able to get some subway to eat, this was a blessing because all I had left for dinner tonight was just ramen and butter herb noodles which isn't to great. The best part about this hostel is that it is 100% donation based so they aren't here to rip you off, but rather just genuinely here for the hikers.

Today was one of the best days in a while and I know tomorrow will be the same as we are going to see McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs. They are another two iconic spots of the trail. I hope everyone at home is doing great, I miss everyone! Thanks for the prayers, support, and encouragement!!

Day 45 on the Trail

After an awesome zero day yesterday, today we had to get back on the trail. Because we were a good ways away from the hostel, it took a while for us to get back to the trail. The shuttle didn't get to the drop off until 10:30 today. It was ok though because we got to rest up a little more than others this morning.

On the trail we had our ups and downs. We met a few new hikers that we had heard about, one of which was named engineer, he just graduated with an engineering degree. It was even cooler when I figured out he was from Georgia. The downs of the day was feeling sick after such a long drive in the mountains, the trail was flooded in some places, and the terrain was pretty difficult. Also after drying out my shoes and washing my clothes yesterday they all got dirty again today. That's how it goes out here though, you just have to go with the flow.

The thing that kept my spirits high today was the podcast I had downloaded at the hostel. I downloaded a ton of podcasts of sermons by David Platt and Francis Chan. Throughout the day I listen to 3 of them. I think I have 68 more podcasts left to listen to so I think I will have plenty of sermons for the next fee weeks.

We didn't see to many people today, which is always a bummer out here but sometimes it happens. Although we did see Jedi who we met right before Hot Springs. It was nice to catch up with him but he is moving quick again and I don't know if we will be able to keep up. Now it's time for a good nights rest though! Thanks for everyone back home supporting and following this journey.

Day 44 on the Trail

It was such a great day today. I woke around 6:30 this morning even though I was taking a zero day. I think it's just automatic now that at 6:30 I wake up. I really like it though because I feel like I cans get way more accomplished throughout the day when I wake up early.

Anyways, sitting in the commons area this morning I felt like I was called to go get stuff for breakfast for everyone. So I decided to go to the Food Lion at 7 this morning and pick up eggs, pancake mix, and bacon! When I got back a few of the hikers pitched in and helped me cook for the 15 or so hikers that stayed the night. It was such an awesome experience to have everyone all together like a family. We all ate together and made the morning a big social event.

As the day progressed a local brought over a huge pot of vegetable soup for lunch. This really was nice, especially seeing how it was a cold rainy day today. It was a perfect lunch for the day. After lunch Max and I went back to the Food Lion and picked up a days worth of food so that we had enough to make it to Catawba.

We got back to the hostel around 2 this afternoon and we all sat around and hung out watching movies together until dinner time. Just coming together and hanging out like a big family is such a cool experience out here. Being faster hikers Max and I usually don't get the family "tramily" atmosphere that most experience on the trail. So it's nice every now and then to have days like this.

For dinner we went to the local Mexican restaurant in Perisburg. Dirty Harry tagged along which was nice because we got to talk to him about Australia. Then after dinner we stopped by DQ for some ice cream. Today I stuffed myself with a ton of food and only slightly regretted it.

Can't wait to get back on the trail tomorrow and try to catch up to a few people we hung out with the past day and a half. Also there are some awesome sections coming up. I hope all is well back at home. Thanks for all the love and support!

Day 43 on the Trail.

Today was another humbling day on the trail. After a short day yesterday we decided to crush some miles today. Knowing it was gonna be stormy all day we suited up in our rain gear and headed out.

The morning hike was quite nice we got to see 4 people after we left the shelter and they were all this morning. Blackfoot was one of the hikers that actually was slack packing back to Angels Rest Hostel. Slack packing is where you have a small book bag or pack that you care stuff just needed for the day and you hike to a destination and get picked up. It makes hiking way easier and faster. Back to this morning though, the rain didn't start until after lunch so we managed to stay pretty dry other that our feet. This was only because the Trail had turned into a river after all the rains the past for days.

We made it to the Captains place around 1. This was one of the highlights of the day. We got to this place and realized that a pretty big river separated us from the house. With some investigating we found a zip line contraption the owner had made so that hikers could cross. It was so fun, I clipped my pack and trekking poles to a line and sat in the seat and pulled my way across the river. We were able to eat lunch on the owners back porch because of the rain starting back again. This was great a dry place to eat is such a blessing, not to mention there was a fridge where they kept free sodas for hikers! What a treat to have when your day isn't going the best.

As we continued to hike after lunch the rain started to gradually pick up, the wind started to blow harder, and it got colder and colder. The farther we went the worse it got so after 20 miles today we finally threw in the towel. We looked up the closest town and called for a shuttle, luckily we were right at a gravel road were we could be picked up. We chose to go with Angels Rest Hostel because we had heard of how awesome of a place it was. After calling for the shuttle we waited an hour on them to get there and when they arrived it was like a celebration for Max and I. Today was definitely the most uncomfortable I have been on the trail, I was so cold I would have been hypothermic if I would have stayed on the trail.

On our ride back to the hostel they took us by Mountain Lake to visit, which is where Dirty Dancing was filmed. I thought it was pretty cool to see and of them for taking us there. When we got to the hostel we registered and met the others staying. One of them happened to be Dirty Harry the Aussie we met a while back. But after we got settled in we decided to ride with Merlin to an all you can eat Chinese buffet (Merlin was one of the people in the shuttle). He is an ex military man who is now going back to school to be a software engineer I believe. He ended up buying us dinner as well, which I wasn't expecting but was very thankful.

Tomorrow we have decided to just zero here because of the weather going to be around the same conditions and we can't go through another day of it. The humbling part of the day was just thinking that we were going to tough it out and get through a less than ideal weather and not being able to accomplish what we set out to do. Then think to myself when God sent his son to die on the cross for our sins, Jesus endured way worse than we could ever imagine and did it not for himself but for us. The suffering I did today was nothing compared to Jesus on the cross. I'm so thankful to be able to be a child of God because the grace and mercy shown by the cross.

Thanks for all the prayers, please continue for good weather and health!

Day 42 on the Trail

Today wasn't the best weather wise but we made the most out of it. We did 8 miles to Rice Field Shelter in the pouring rain, it wouldn't have been too bad other than we wasn't wearing our rain gear and we got soaked. Being completely wet and having temperatures in the 50's means you get cold really quick. So when we arrived at this shelter at 10:30 I figured we would just have an early lunch, but as we ate we got super cold. I didn't want to get back out in the rain and get any colder so we decided to just take the day as a relax day and try again tomorrow.

One cool thing about today though, we did meet a lot of hikers. Billy Goat is who we hiked with this morning to the shelter. He decided to continue on while we stayed. Three others stayed at the shelter with us though one was named Rocket Man and the other two I can't quite remember. They were all really nice and we got to talk about the trail and the weather. Most of the time though was spent sleeping. They slept for a while and we tried to as well that way tomorrow we could put some miles down.

Mentally it was a tough day, the rain kind of brings you down. Physically on the other had was great after a for longer days, this break was nice. It will put us close on food for getting to our next resupply but that will be alright. Spirituality I'm doing great, today's weather was demoralizing but other than that I'm thankful God gave me the opportunity to do this. I know I'm growing every day from this and I hope that through this journey others will be helped as well!

Please keep us in your prayers! I'm so thankful for all that's following along and encouraging us! It truly is a help out here especially on days like today.

Day 41 on the Trail

Today definitely proved that we are out of a hiking bubble. We saw more wildlife than people today, and most of the people we saw were going south bound so we wasn't able to talk to them too much.

Although there was a lack of hikers today was nice. We were able to hike 24.2 miles over some moderate terrain. Along the way we were able to get close to 4 doe as well as spot 3 salamanders and 2 chipmunks. The salamanders were around the edge of a pond we came across mid morning.

The weather report has been calling for rainy conditions all week and luckily we haven't had to hike in it much at all. It rained a little today but we were super close to a shelter and hurried up to get there by the time it started to rain heavy. On the way to this shelter I learned a valuable lesson to. I ran out of water 7 miles before the shelter and there were no water sources around until the shelter. It was quite miserable, those 7 miles. Now I'm in a similar situation again, the place we were going to camp said it had a waterfall, but I found out that it was dry and there isn't any water for another 5 miles. So we have everything out that can collect water so that when it rains tonight we might get enough to last until a reliable water source.

Hopefully tomorrow we will see more people out, it definitely makes the day more exciting when we get to speak to others. Max did text a woman we met back in Georgia today. This was Milo and his mom that we were checking up on, they actually just got into Damascus and they're taking the weekend off. I don't blame them at all, especially with the weather forecast.

Thanks for all the prayers and support!

Day 40 on the Trail

What an amazing day it was to be out in nature. This morning I woke up around 6:30 and before I could get completely awake it started to rain. "Great, this is exactly how I want to start the day" is what I was think. So Max and I decided to stay in our tents for a while until the rain passed. After about 30-45 minutes it stopped and we were able to get packed up and start hiking. Knowing it was supposed to storm all day we wanted to make sure we crushed some miles early.

As the day progresses it only got prettier and prettier. The sky was clear and the sun was out! It actually got really hot today but luckily there was a nice breeze for most of the day. The reason why we were also pushing harder today was because we had to get to Trent's Grocery to pick up our mail drops today before they closed. So we did around 21.5 miles before 4:30 today. This is way quicker than normal and we kind of liked getting that much done that quick. I think it would be great if we could always get in earlier. It would for sure give us more opportunities to hang out with other hikers.

Trent's Grocery wasn't what I had expected though. Throughout the trail I have heard about it and in my mind I played it up to be an awesome hiker haven but it turns out to be just an old country gas station. Although it wasn't what I had imagined it was still nice, especially because they had a little kitchen where they would make burgers and stuff to sell. I made sure to eat dinner there! I had a double cheeseburger with cajun fries and then 5 chicken tenders. The coolest part about the place was meeting a guy named trigger, he was preparing for a thru hike starting at the norther terminus which is Mount Katahdin. He is actually a Methodist that is being sent out by his church. Hopefully we will cross paths with him later in the summer. We sat there and talked about our experience so far with him which was awesome to get to have a spiritual conversation with someone. While we were talking there was a few hikers that passed by and talked to us for a minute!

Still can't believe I'm actually out here! It's such a great experience. Almost forgot, this morning we spooked a turkey on the side of the trail and it flew off as we came up on it. Scared us to death but the experience was amazing to see wildlife out her is a blessing! Also I want to thank the Martin family for sending us an awesome care package! Please continue to pray for us as we continue our journey! Thanks.

Day 39 on the Trail

Today was another good day out on the Appalachian Trail. Max and I were able to put in exactly 25 miles today. It's crazy how your body adjust to something you do for an extended period of time. I was thinking earlier that through Georgia and early North Carolina it was tough to get 15 miles a day, now we are doing 25 miles and enjoying ourselves. We are definitely not the fastest by no means but we do put in miles just because of how long we hike. Most people out here hike until 3 or 4 while we get in around 6 or 7. It's just too beautiful out to not keep going. We did however find someone who hiked around the same distance as us and we are gonna try to keep up with him, his name is Speedy and he is a chef from California.

This morning was amazing, around 6 miles in we came to a shelter that use to be the old fire wardens cabin. They converted it into an 8 person shelter. Also we walked through a pasture that was on top of a huge mountain.

Another event that happened today was I had my first fall. A thought ran through my head earlier this morning about me not falling yet and I thought I might be able to make it all the way without falling. Not even an hour later I'm face-planting while talking to my mom on the phone. Luckily I didn't get hurt and it was just a little embarrassing. Hopefully it will be my last fall though!!

There really wasn't many people we saw on the trail today which is beginning to be more and more prominent. I don't know if everyone has dropped out or if we are just in between bubbles of people. There is the guys we have been hiking with though that we have been trying to provoke spiritual conversations with. They always change the subject but maybe if we can continue they might open up. One of them did give me his phone number that way I could come up and hunt in Illinois with him. Ministry on the trail is tough but such a need. There are so many ways to help with trail ministry. One way is what I'm doing by hiking along side everyone and being a light but not everyone wants to hike 2200 miles. Being involved with trail magic and helping hikers in towns also are great ways to make a positive impact on their lives, making them question your motives for helping them. That's where I've found you get the question. Whether your giving food away or offering help, often times it will catch people off guard and they're ask why.

Being out here is starting to develop me into the person I wanted to be and also has opened my eyes to many things. I can truly say that I am where God wants me to be and it's the best feeling in the world.

Please continue to pray for Max and I as we continue on this journey. I hope all is well back home! God Bless!

Day 38 on the Trail

Today ended up being a great day out here! This morning we decided to sleep in a little and took our time getting out of the motel. After packing up and eating the donuts we had bought for breakfast we left around 9:30 and planned on hiking until we were tired.

Leaving the motel this morning I was struggling mentally. The forecast called for a rainy nasty day and I really was missing home. With each step this morning I was questioning whether or not I felt like God was still calling me to be out here. So I spent most of the morning in prayer. I prayed that Gods will be done through me whether it was on or off the trail.

Around mid-day it all changed though, I realized it still was great weather, I was able to talk to Kelsey (My Girlfriend), and I got to listen to some great uplifting music. My mindset completely flipped to being more along the lines of thankful for the beautiful weather. The ability to be out here with opportunities to further the kingdom of God is humbling. By praying this morning I feel like God really opened my eyes to the purpose of this journey. In sad times its way to lose focus, but I've found that prayer is what helps me regain the focus I need.

After the day had took a turn for the better we saw a buddy we had been hiking with a week ago. Easy Mack, he had caught back up to us after taking a zero day at a friends lake house. We also got to see Goat again and actually he is camping with us tonight along with a guy named Speedy which we hiked with throughout the first few weeks. I actually think they are hiking around the same pace as us and I'm thinking we could stick with them until I come back home for Kelsey's graduation. Then maybe Ee can catch back up to them later.

Through the ups and the downs of the trail, I'm still so glad to be out here. I can tell there is a ton more work to be done out here! Thanks for all the support and encouragement back home! It is always appreciated. God bless!

Day 37 on the Trail

Relaxation sums up today in one word! We did what they call a "nero" on the trail today. A nero is just a day where you don't hike to many miles or "nearly zero" miles. So today we hiked 4.7 miles into a small town outside of Atkins VA. to a older motel.

Because of it being a relax day we decided to get up early and try to get to the motel early. We arrived around 9:30 at the Relax Inn. On the way we passed an awesome old school building that was built in the 1890's. We took a moment to stop in and check out this school museum place, it still had all the desks and chalkboards up. There was also some trail magic in the building. Sodas, little Debbie's, fruit you name it, it was there. What a great way to start the morning.

After making it to the motel we checked in early and stretched out on the bed for a while until lunch came. Around lunchtime we took showers and put some clothes on to wash. As the clothes were drying we went to the barn which was a restaurant right up the road. We heard they had an awesome burger so I decided to try it. It was a 1lb burger with cheese and bacon on it. I didn't think it would be enough so I added a slawdog with it. The lunch was phenomenal!

After lunch we got a ride to dollar general for a few supplies. Also finished up laundry. We found a good movie on tv and took a nice nap. Waking up around 5:30 we decided to order some pizza from Pizza Hut. After 2 hours of waiting we got a call that said they didn't deliver this far out from the store (7.6 miles away) so we had to settle for the Hunts Brothers Pizza from the gas station.

Our day was pretty uneventful but it was much needed. Just being able to relax and have a bath with epsom salt made a world of difference with my bodies aches and pains. Tomorrow we plan to get back at it and I'm super excited! Hopefully tomorrow will bring a bunch of opportunities to share the good news of Christ!

Thanks for all the love and support!

Day 36 on the Trail

Woke up this morning and it's Easter! Last night wasn't the best of sleep because Just Phil is a big time snorer. It's ok though, this morning I was wide awake and ready for the sunrise service. We had a van come and shuttle us to the cemetery where the service was held. When we arrived the cemetery was on top of a hill with a beautiful 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains. As we waited for everyone to arrive we sat around and talked to each other.

I was able to find out that Trippin's husband is in the military and was being deployed today while she was out on the trail. If everyone could keep her husband and her family in your prayers that would be great. Also Just Phil's blisters are still extremely bad and he is gonna go to the doctor later today. Pray for him to have a quick recovery so he can stay out on the trail.

Once everyone arrived we started service. There was a woman and man there that had hiked the trail before and they opened us off my singing a AT version of Amazing Grace. I thought it was a really good version of the song. The passage the pastor preached on was Mark 16:1-9 and focused on Mary Magdalene and why Jesus appeared to her first after his resurrection.

After service they shuttle us back to the church where they had prepared a huge breakfast. We all ate as much as we could, it's hard to pass up good food when your out on the trial. A kind gentleman from the church gave us a ride back to Dickey Gap later on this morning.

As hiking goes, today wasn't to bad other than there were a ton of rocks on the trail. We put in 20 plus miles again today which puts us 4.2 outside of Atkins. This is where we wanted to be for an easy walk in to town tomorrow. I can definitely feel my feet aching because of the rocks though, over a long period of time rock do a number to your feet. We hiked a lot with Stitch today which was cool. He's from Indiana! We left him a few miles back though because he was going to stop at the town of Marion instead of Atkins 12 miles farther. I don't blame him though Marion is a bigger town and his friend was waiting on him there.

Now I am stealth camping close to town where we can get in early tomorrow for a nero. I can't wait to rest for most of the day tomorrow, my body needs all the rest it can get right now. But all in all it was an amazing day, wish I was at home celebrating Easter with the family but I know this is where I'm supposed to be at the moment. Thanks for all the love, prayers, and support it means the world to me!

Day 35 on the Trail

Today was a pretty good day. We had planned to go farther than we did but I'm glad that we changed our minds. We had planned to go 24 miles to trimpi shelter but due to the timing we decided to go to this Baptist Hostel. By going 4 miles less than planned we hoped that we were going to be able to go to a sunrise service.

Before I go in to more detail on the hostel I want to tell you about the rest of the day. It was an easy day, we got a late start and just took it easy for most of the day. We crossed over the Grayson Highlands this morning. It was really pretty, rolling hills with a few rocks on top! On top of the views there were ponies in a few different places. We didn't spend the time getting to them but just watching them as we passed.

There wasn't many people out on the trail after getting out of the Grayson Highland park. It was probably because most had seen the weather forecast. Around mid afternoon we got rained on for a bit but it was nice to cool down, not really enough to soak us!

Back to the hostel though. We arrived at Dickey Gap around 6 and had no cellphone service to call a shuttle or ride. So this meant we got to hitch our first ride into town. It took around 45 minutes to finally get a ride 3 miles up the rode. It was totally worth it, a gentleman and his son rode by and was nice enough to take us to the church. From there we walked up to the hostel and met Stitch, Just Phil, and Trippin. They were the other hikers that stayed at the hostel us. We talked and hung out for a while before I walked down to take a shower. Just Phil had some awful blisters on his heals that he's going to town tomorrow to get checked out. They were worse than any I had ever seen before.

After dinner it was straight to bed because we have to get up early tomorrow for the sunrise service. I'm extremely excited though, we haven't been to a service since we have been on the trail. Stoked for the Easter service! Thanks again for the love and support! Continue to pray for us and our ministry.

Day 34 on the Trail

It was another pretty easy day today. We did a little over 19 miles landing us at Thomas Knob Shelter. Although we took it pretty easy it was still a very rewarding day.

The hike today wasn't as bad as I was thinking it would be. We had to climb 2 mountains with over 1000-1500 foot of elevation change. Luckily Virginia is kind and the climb was very gradual on both occasions.

Also we are a mile away from the 500 mile mark on the trail! Along the 500 miles the most we saw when it came to wildlife were birds and squirrels. Until today, while hiking we were able to see 4 deer. One of them let us get within 15 feet of her which was insane. I had never been that close to a deer that wasn't in captivity. Also we finally met the wild ponies I've been hearing about. As we walked into camp this evening we were greeted by them and one of them actually let us take selfies with it and let us pet it. Such and awesome experience.

Views today have been about like usual with one or two great views a day. One of the great views today was at lunch. We ate on top of Buzzard Rock which overlooked a huge set of mountain ranges. Definitely a great lunch spot.

Didn't really meet too many people on the trail today other than some day hikers. Only saw one thru hiker today other than this morning. It was Plant, he is know out here for hiking the PCT twice already. He has also been putting in some big miles on the AT. With a pack weighing no more than 18lbs, I can see why he can do that.

I have found out that out here for me at least it is a mental game. Physically and spiritually I'm doing great but sometimes my mind gets the best of me. I get to missing home or focus on getting today's hike over with so much that I loose focus on the real task at hand. I remind myself a lot that this hike isn't about me but everyone else on the trail.

Ready for tomorrow though, gonna try to push a little harder and add a few more miles if my body allows. Thanks again for the prayers and support, please continue!

Day 33 on the Trail

What a great day it was. The weather was awesome here, sunny and 75! I woke up this morning to Scare Crow putting on coffee. I'm a huge fan of coffee so I waited for it to brew and then got me a cup. He introduced me to putting hot coco packets in my coffee to make a mocha. I instantly fell in love with it.

When Max woke up we decided to go down to Mojo's Coffee Shop and get some higher end coffee. I sided with another mocha and a order of blueberry pancakes. This was an amazing meal, well at least for my first breakfast. After Mojo's we went back to the Broken Fiddle Hostel and Barbara (a local) had started fixing breakfast for everyone in the hostel. I couldn't pass it up, that would just be rude. So I ate a plate of biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, eggs, and an assortment of fresh fruit. I would call this morning extremely successful food wise.

After breakfast we headed down to one of the outfitters in town and purchased some new shoe insoles. I got some called super feet green. They are really rigid right now but the guy at the outfitter said it would take a week to break them in. Hopefully it will be sooner than a week.

After the outfitters we swung over to Hey Joe's again where I at another helping of chicken nachos. They are the bomb dot com. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who visits Damascus.

Once it was time to go we settled out debts with the hostel and were on our way back to the trail. Of course it was after one game of corn hole with the owner of the hostel. We won after a long intense game. We then made a pit stop by subway for a sandwich for dinner and then to the ice cream parlor for a treat for the heat.

We left Damascus around 3:30 and hiked 9.2 miles to Saunders Shelter. Here we met a guy named joker and another father and son from Kentucky. The hike was easy which was great coming off a rest day!

I would say the stay in Damascus had one of the biggest impacts on our ministry. I felt like it really took off at the hostel. We volunteered a ton around the hostel, helping with any and everything we could. I found it to bring my spirits up and I also feel like people are starting to wonder why we are so nice and are so helpful. This is a good thing, maybe there will be a lot of questions to come. Please pray for questions and opportunities to arise!

So thankful to be out here doing one of my favorite things while serving God. Blessed is definitely an understatement. Thanks again for all the continued prayers and support!!

Day 32 on the Trail

It was a short but great day of hiking. This morning we got up around 8 and did 12 miles into Damascus. Most of it was downhill though which is worse on my body than up heals. So my body was sore coming into the town. This led us to the Broken Fiddle Hostel, along with Kevin the gnome (a 6lb garden gnome Max carried 42 miles from hostel to hostel).

Once again staying in town this evening was great. My body is recovering all while we are hanging out with fellow hikers and getting to know one another. It's awesome that a few we have been hiking with made it here this evening as well. The owner of the hostel bought stuff to make dinner tonight so all of the hikers pitched in and cooked a ton of meatloaf and other side dishes. This was cool to see and be a part of as all of us worked together to make dinner.

We have yet to decide if we are gonna leave tomorrow around lunch and get back on the trail or take a zero and continue to rest our bodies. This last week has been rough on us and this time is much needed. Also we can fellowship with other hikers way better in town rather than on trail.

Thanks for all the love and support from everyone!

Day 31 on the Trail

Today was our longest day yet. We did 30 miles from Boot's Off Hostel trying to get to Damascus. We ended up a little short but after hiking for 14 hours we were give out.

The day surely is gonna be one that I remember though. We got to hike with some off the people we left the hostel with this morning. We normally hike alone because no one can keep our pace but today we made sure that we breaked more often and for longer. It just so happened that the people from the hostel were able to keep up.

The terrain other than hiking around Lake Watauga was kind of boring. It was the same thing for most of the day with small ups and downs. Later in the day we did go through a pasture that had a decent view. So that's why we were able to do so many miles.

Still fighting a head cold and I know I will be sore tomorrow but today I was grateful for. I'm ready for Damascus in the morning, we have a few things to get done as well as resupply. Please continue to pray for opportunities and for our health! Thanks for the support!

Day 30 on the Trail

Today was a really humbling day for me. We woke up this morning early, around 6:15, and started our normal routine of getting out of camp. We knew we had our work cut out for us today after looking at the topographical maps. 24 miles is what we planned to do from Moreland Gap Shelter to Vandeventer Shelter.

We didn't make it. Along the way today my body just started breaking down on me. My feet had blisters popping up all over the place, the front of my right ankle started flaring up, my cold felt like it was getting worse, and the terrain was just putting me in a horrible mood. That sounds fun doesn't it? Yeah, it really wasn't my best day. There were parts of today when I questioned myself on why I was even out here.

My day turned around at lunch. I realized that my body needed me to slow down. So Max and I ended up a few miles short of our goal at the Boot's Off Hostel. As we were having lunch at the shore of Watauga Lake we met Leach and Snacks. They are SOBO's that had gotten off the trail for the winter months. Which I think was very smart. After talking to them a while they offered us a ride into town with one of their friends, Gonzo. We accepted this offer especially since we wanted some good food to eat. So we stopped at the local dinner. I had a BBQ sandwich with slaw on it and a BBQ bacon burger. Then we went by McDonalds for resupply via cheeseburgers. Max and I both bought a few to get us to Damascus.

Taking this short day because of my body conditions almost embraced me. Knowing it was my fault we didn't reach our goal. Although Max was very supportive of our stay because of my condition. During this down time this evening, I was able to do a lot of thinking and come to the realization that it's not how fast you can get somewhere but more so who you meet along the way. Through this delay we met so many new people and met back up with a lot more.

I was also able to really get into my Bible more tonight than regular which was nice! Usually I'm stuck to a routine where I read 2 chapters a night and no more so I can get enough sleep. Tonight was a different story and I can tell it helped me get back focused on the task at had.

Out here it is easy to lose focus and that is something that I pray will change. Today has been such a rewarding day! I hope and pray that the days to come will be just as rewarding.

Please continue to pray for Max and I!

Day 29 on the Trail

What a day it was, 27.6 miles down and a few blisters later I have made it to Moreland Gap Shelter from Overmountain Shelter. The day was relatively easy terrain wise with beautiful views for most of the day. This morning consisted of ridge running a bunch of balds close to grandfather mountain.

Around noon today we made it to the Doe River crossing where we ran into a bit of trail magic. It was an owner of a hostel giving away some cokes to thru hikers which was quite nice when it was around 70 today.

The next stop was at Jones Falls which was where we ate lunch at! It was beautiful and while we were there we met a hiking club from Tennessee. Different from the hiking club we met from the University of Tennessee last night.

After lunch we still had around 13 miles to go which turned out to be the hardest by far. A few times I got really down on myself because of how long and hard it was. What got me through it was some Big Daddy Weave and a lot of praying.

We rolled in the shelter pretty late and met crow and energizer. Energizer was the sister to pig pen from along time ago. Pig pen couldn't keep up. We had a quick dinner after it was dark and got ready for bed quickly. I don't care for getting in this late but at least we made it here.

Hopefully my body will recover overnight and we can hit it hard tomorrow! I can definitely feel the wear on my body though. Please keep me and Max in your prayers. Thanks again for everyone's support!

Day 28 on the Trail

It was a day full of ups and downs today literally. It was a tough day as we did around 21.6 miles from Iron Mountain Gap to Overmountain Shelter.

As we hiked today we had to climb Roan Mountain. It was really difficult with a bunch of elevation change. I think we climbed over 2200 ft of elevation over 6 miles. It might not seem like it was that rough but the mountain side was covered with snow melt which made an awful slush and mud. The views from the top was pretty cool though. We also saw where the guide book said there was a hotel up there. So we were thinking about doing lunch at the hotels little restaurant, unfortunately the hotel was from along time ago and it was just the last remains of it. So we settled for a snowball fight and the lunch we had packed from our resupply.

From the top of Roan Mountain to the shelter my feet started to bother me. At first I thought it was my sock wrinkling up under my foot but then I realized that it was just nerves that were tingling and causing discomfort. I hope it is better by tomorrow!

Still going strong though, we have another big day tomorrow but it should be way easier terrain! Thanks for everyone's support and prayers!

Day 27 on the Trail

Today was a great day! I was in the best mood ever today and I hope that it will carry over to tomorrow. I woke up this morning at Uncle Jonny's Hostel and had an awesome breakfast before getting back on the trail. It was 4 servings of oatmeal and a poptart.

As we started hiking we crossed over the Nolichucky River and up the trail we went. Along the way we saw a red salamander with black spots. It was in the middle of the trail and seemed to be drying out so I took out my water and put a few drops on its skin to hopefully prolong its life!

We also hiked in 6 inches of snow that had fallen last night. It was not to fun with high
winds and trail shoes that weren't waterproof. But snow always makes things more beautiful! On top of Unaka Mountain there is a spruce forest which was covered in snow. This made for a mystic look that will never be forgotten. I will say though the hike up the mountain was not too easy.

Today we also said goodbye to a few of the people we had been hiking with off and on since the Smokies. They weren't gonna be able to keep the pace that Max and I want to get to. Maybe we will see them down the trail though.

20.2 miles from Uncle Jonny's Hostel is where I'm staying tonight. It is at a road crossing around Iron Mountain Gap. Looks like it's gonna be a cold night with temperatures dipping below freezing and killer winds. Hopefully tomorrow won't be to cold.

Tomorrow we have another 21 miles to a shelter that is a barn! We are excited to see how neat it is. Continue to pray for our health, the opportunities to share the Gospel, and grow personally in Christ! Thanks for all the love and support show, it is greatly appreciated.

Day 26 on the Trail

It has been a great day today. Last night the weather called for awful rain and storms through the night and all day. I've come to realize that the weather is wrong a lot of times. Yes, it rained off and on all day but not to the extent of what the weather app was saying.

After waking up at a good time this morning we crushed 6.1 miles from No Business Knob Shelter to Uncle Jonny's Hostel in under 2 hours. This put us here at 10:00 am!

What to do with so much time? Up until now we hadn't really had this much time to burn. It was really nice to have time to get things done. I downloaded some more music from Spotify, got some groceries, and repacked my food bag from a resupply drop.

The part I love talking about was the food! Today for lunch we went to an ACE (all you can eat) restaurant. It was called pizza plus and boy did I eat some pizza. I must have had 20 slices. Then a few hours later we had dinner at a Mexican restaurant! Couldn't pass on the Arroz con Pollo dish, which is just grilled chicken over a bed of rice and covered with queso. Needless to say I am stuffed and probably ate enough for a few days of hiking.

One funny thing that happened today was we had a competition in the hostel bunk house to see who had the heaviest and lightest food bag. Mine was the heaviest by far at over 16 pounds which was 2 pounds over the next closest. I'm going to have a long day hiking tomorrow, especially since it is hiking out of a valley.

At first I wanted to get a cabin to myself instead of the bunkhouse today. I'm glad that it was all sold out because I got to hangout with everyone. This will help grow closer to the people that are hiking with me! So glad to be out here and living the dream while sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Thanks for the continued prayers and support.

Day 25 on the Trail

Today was a pretty good day! Woke up this morning to the sunrise get over the mountains. With us camping in the meadow on top of one of the mountains the sunrise was spectacular. While watching it, we were able to even cook breakfast from our tents, this was great seeing how it was chilly this morning.

It was an easy day hiking compared to usual. We hiked 16.5 miles to No Business Knob Shelter. The reason we didn't do to many miles today was because we wanted to get into Erwin tomorrow morning. Erwin is only 5 miles away from this shelter, which won't even take 2 hours.

I thought the name of this shelter was pretty peculiar when I first heard it. Later I finally realized that the reason it is called "No Business" Knob Shelter is due to the fact that it does t have a privy (composting toilet).

It was also nice that we were able to hangout with people we have already met. Again we are with P-Nut, Jetpack, and also Lioness. They are pretty cool, like most on the trail they are heavy with language though. P-Nut also said that he was going to quit smoking this morning. As of now I think he still is going strong! Keep him and his quitting in your prayers. It's amazing to see how some people change for the better out here! God really moves on the trail.

Tonight is calling for some rough weather so please pray for our safety and good health! Thanks for everything y'all do!

Day 24 on the Trail

What an awesome day it was. Woke up this morning and had a great breakfast. Breakfasts burritos with eggs, bacon bits and cheese. We took our time leaving camp this morning which was kind of nice.

As we started walking the sun came out and it soon became one of the prettiest days yet in terms of weather. The terrain was also not to hard this morning which was great.

Today we made it around 20 miles to a little meadow close to 2 miles before Low Gap. The reason we didn't do 25 mile like we planned was because there was no need. We wanted to be in Erwin around 11 on Thursday and we have like 23 miles left. We could get there tomorrow if we wanted.

Physically, I'm doing pretty good. My knee was a little tender today but luckily I had a knee brace that I put on which helped tremendously. Other than that there isn't to much to complain about. My feet feel great since I got these trail runners. I feel like I can literally hike 30 miles and be fine.

Mentally, I'm doing well. I miss everyone back home like crazy but that's to be expected when this is the longest I've been away from home. The worst days are when there is bad weather, so today I was in a great mood.

Spirituality, I feel like I am getting stronger each day. Spending time in the word and strengthening my relationship has been a focus recently. I think by not having as many opportunities to share yet means that I've had more time to grow myself. Still waiting on God to put someone in our path but I know it will come.

Hope everyone has a great rest of the week! Continue to pray for good health and opportunities to share the Gospel! Thanks for all the support!!

Day 23 on the Trail

Today was a day of ups and downs. This morning we woke up and got out of camp around 8:30 and decided to push to the. Ext shelter to have breakfast in. As we arrived the rain began and it didn't stop until after lunch around 2:30. So we got completely soaked, but it wasn't as bad as you would think.

The best part of the day was after the rain stopped. The skies cleared up some and we got to hike on some awesome ridges. The wind was so powerful that I had to lean into it to keep from falling over. The views were incredible though.

Another thing that happened today was we reached the 300 mile mark! It's close to 1/7 of the way through with the trail.

As we made camp tonight we met back up with a lot of people we met before Hot Springs. This shelter is packed, it might be one of the most packed one I've seen.

Ministry out here is alright, not as many opportunities as I would have liked but the way I think about it is God will put people and opportunities in my path when he sees it fit. Still just getting to know stories and helping people however they need it.

The rain took it out of me today, I'm exhausted. A huge day tomorrow so it's time to rest up. Thanks again for prayers and support, it means so much to me.

Day 21 & 22 on the Trail

So yesterday was the 21st day on the trail and I took what hikers call a "zero day." This is just a day where you don't hike any miles. I stayed in Myra's Cottage right outside of Hot Springs with my family and girlfriend. It was great to get to see them and spend some time with them while I rested for the day. We only briefly went to town to grab some lunch and a few things for my hike. Other than that we spent the day enjoying the tranquility of Myra's Cottage.

Today was a hard day for me at the beginning. I woke up this morning and had to go through all my gear and try to send surf back home that I didn't need. I felt like I didn't have enough time to do this, but it was due to my procrastination. We were able to all eat breakfast as a family before we left to go into town.

In town I was able to get the last of the things I needed for resupply. Which was just a knee brace, fuel for my stove, and a new water bottle. Next we met Max's family at the diner for lunch. This was pretty nice to have our families together right before we left back for the trail. Mama Nash even made a cake for my birthday, which was incredible!

The hardest part of the day is what came next. It was saying goodbye to everyone. I felt like I didn't have enough time with them but I knew I had to get back on the trail so I wouldn't go back home. It was tough but knowing my mission wasn't complete made me push on.

We then hiked 9 miles to Rich Mountain Camp where we set up for the evening. The hike was awesome and we passed a place called lovers leap where you could look out and see the whole town of Hot Springs. We made great timing to camp. I think it had to do with the new trail runners we picked up back in town. My feet deal a whole lot better now that they aren't crammed in my boots.

We were able to camp with grasshopper, cricket, fadora the explorer, gourmet, and hop-a-long. They are cool, I had met a few of them before so I was able to talk to them more. One of them had carried a guitar from town that some of them were playing and singing. It made me want to learn to play.

Now it's time for bed though, gonna try to get up early tomorrow. Thanks again for all the love and support back home!

Day 20 on the Trail

Today was exactly what I had hoped for, for the most part! Max and I woke up this morning with 3.4 miles to go to get into Hot Springs North Carolina. This was such a great feeling considering we are about to take 2 days in town to rest and recuperate. The best part about it is that our families were gonna meet us in town.

Our families weren't going to be to Hot Springs until later in the evening so when we awoke after a sleepless night, at least for me. We decided to take it easy and not get in a rush to get into town. Why get into town and sit around until the evening? This might have been a mistake, with our minds skewed from the unreliable weather report, we set out for Hot Springs around 9.

Side story... the reason the night was so sleepless was due to being kept awake by the sound of scurrying mice along the rafters and walls of the shelter. This was an all night ordeal that started at around 7 in the evening. Yes, we went to bed at 7, because we got into a shelter with a group of early birds. So while everyone else is tired and sleeping Max and I are wide awake laugh and trying to see the mice. Let me tell you, sometimes it can be quite hard to be quiet in the shelter. Anyways, the mice were just looking for food that hikers might have dropped throughout the day. I had a few times where they would run across the top of my sleeping pad, or try to get into my hat which was nasty, and also the reason why I couldn't sleep. By morning no damage was done though and we were able to pack up and head for town.

Now, back to hiking to town. Around 200 yards from the shelter we noticed 2 grave sites which was creepy. Some say they haunt the shelter, I say it was the mice that did the haunting. But nevertheless after around half a mile down the trail it starts to pour rain. Completely caught us off guard due to the fact that the weather reports said it was supposed to be clear until 10 that evening. So we threw on our rain gear and decided to make a quick trip of the last 3 miles. Needless to say we made it down the mountain to town in under an hour. Oh and the rain decided to stop as we reached town also!

Once we got into town we were informed of a free breakfast for hikers. There is nothing more satisfying to here, especially when you had no breakfast because you ran out of food, than free food! So Max and I went to check it out. A local ministry outreach program was the ones hosting this free breakfast. The owner of a small house trailer right inside of town has been doing this for a few years __________. What was cool was churches from around the country can sign up for a week during the hiking season to come and serve the hikers breakfast and lunch. This is such a great idea! The place stayed pack the whole day and man of the hikers were able to take resupply backs that had the book of John in them.

After amazing breakfast, we went to the local outfitter to pick up a few things. One of the items I had to get was another pair of shoes. It might be hard to believe, but over just 270 or so miles, my feet have grown a whole size bigger. This is due to hiking for extended period of time with extra weight on my back. Another item is a long sleeve light weight shirt for sunny days. I've already gotten burnt a time or two out here and sunscreen is to heavy to carry in my opinion.

We then met up with another hiker named Jedi and went to get some lunch. The only time we had previously met Jedi was last night before we went to bed. He came rolling in late after a long day of hiking. So when we went to get lunch at the Spring Creek Tavern we were able to get to know him better. He was from California, and previously in the Air Force. I thought it was neat that he mentioned that he kept his Bible on his kindle. I never thought of that and it saves a ton on weight. While eating this huge black and blue burger, which was delicious, we met some guys Jedi was previously hiking with. It was two older gentlemen who were section hiking the whole trail. After talking to them for a while, they offered to give us a ride to Max's cabin. Their names were Obi One and I forget the other

Before they finished their lunch though, Max and I were able to run to the local ice cream shop and get the best ice cream I might have ever ate. It consisted of a warm apple fritter on the bottom with a huge scoop of cinnamon ice cream topped with cinnamon apple slices and whipped cream.

After ice cream we met back up with them and rode up to Max's cabin. It was great to get a shower and relax a little while as we waited on our families to get there. His family arrived first around 4! So I hung out with them for a while which was cool to see some familiar faces, plus I kinda feel like part of their family now! We went to the local diner around 6:30 which is where I my family met me.

Couldn't put into words how glad I was to see them. This weekend is one that I have been waiting for, for quite some time. After eating a huge 20oz hamburger steak with gravy and mashed potatoes, we headed off to our cottage! We are staying at Myra' Cottage, this place is awesome. It is a little cottage in the woods that is surrounded by a scenic view! My favorite part is the back porch that overlooks a little stream and grassy area. I wouldn't mind living here.

So needless to say it has been a fun filled, busy day. It's now time to let my body recover a little bit!

I hope everyone is doing well back home! Thanks again for all the support and prayers!
